Massive Data Breach Affects 1.3 Million Residents in Maine: Cybersecurity Threat Hits U.S. Federal Agencies

In a startling revelation, a data breach in Maine earlier this year has impacted approximately 1.3 million residents, as disclosed by the state on Thursday. The breach, a component of a massive cyberattack in May, targeted a vulnerability in the widely used MOVEit file-transfer system, affecting various U.S. federal agencies, including the Department of Energy and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Maine, with a population of about 1.38 million, reported that the compromised data included sensitive information such as names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, driver’s license or state identification numbers, taxpayer identification numbers, medical information, and health insurance details.

Over 50 percent of the exposed data originated from Maine’s Department of Health and Human Services, with an additional 10 to 30 percent stemming from the state’s Department of Education. Several other state departments also fell victim to the breach.

Taking immediate action, the state revealed that it promptly “blocked internet access to and from the MOVEit server” and implemented security measures recommended by the tool’s owning company as soon as awareness of the breach surfaced. External cybersecurity experts were engaged to investigate the incident’s nature and scope, leading to an extensive examination to identify the impacted information.

Individuals whose Social Security numbers or taxpayer identification numbers were compromised are eligible to receive two years of credit monitoring and identity theft protection services, according to a press release issued on Thursday.

Attributed to a Russian ransomware group, the attack has far-reaching consequences, impacting more than 70 million people globally, according to Emsisoft, an anti-malware company keeping a running tally. Notably, the breach also compromised 6 million records at the Louisiana Department of Motor Vehicles and affected approximately 4 million individuals through the Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing. Furthermore, 3.5 million others were impacted through the Oregon Department of Transportation.
